Is the Arab Spring a movement leading to more freedom and equal rights?
Not for women, according to Amal al-Malki, a Qatari author who is very concerned about the rights of women in the Arab world.
She is largely skeptical of recent developments and says, if anything, the Arab Spring has only highlighted the continuing “second-class citizenship" of women in the region.
She argues that despite some progress made Arab women are still largely absent in the public arena.
“We have no voice. We have no visibility... And I am telling you, this is why women’s rights should be institutionalised, it should not be held hostage at the hand of political leaderships who can change in a second, right? Governments should be held responsible for treating men and women equally.”
Will the Arab Spring deliver its promises to everyone? Or is there reason to believe that women will be left behind? What has changed for women in the Arab world?
On this episode of Talk to Al Jazeera, we talk to Amal al-Malki, a woman not afraid to ring the alarm bells, about women's rights in the Arab world, political and social empowerment and Islamic feminism.
i think she is absolutely rite to say this conversation about women's rights in the Arab world. everywhere almost the same situation

ReplyDeleteWomen have rights for freedom, she can do politic.A country can't develop if there women are in backward cause a mother can teach a child and make him strong. If a women does not have opportunity to talk about her rights and doesn't get well education what will learn next generation from his mother.
ReplyDeleteWomen specially Arabs plays an important role in a country...some says that women has no capabilities like man, yeah its true but now a days what men does women can do...and "she" is can do politics too.right?why not? there's a lot of progressive country now who was ruled over by a woman itself...in some way another men and woman has the same power.
ReplyDeleteWomen are the base of any home, community, society. They give birth to child and prepares him/her until he/she doesn't settle in life. A woman takes care of man as mother in childhood, as a friend during teen age, and share all joys and grieves as a wife until death. If she is ignored and left dumb in any society then that society will get ruined.
ReplyDeleteUnequality in men and women should not be usual thing for us. Nowadays, in our modern era. Women may not be treated as weak and can not defend their own self, we must not think of that way. It will start among ourself for more women will not be abused anymore.

ReplyDeleteThe Qur'an expresses two main views on the role of women. It states that women are not equal to men in terms of inheritance, but men and women before God are equal in terms of their religious duties (i.e. belief in God and his messenger, praying, fasting, paying zakat (charity), making hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah/ Medina)) and places them "under" the care of men (i.e. men arelife, but not identical. Surah an-Nisa' 4:1 states that men and women are created from a single soul (nafs wahidah). One person does not come before the other, one is not superior to the other, and one is not the derivative of the other. A woman is not created for the purpose of a man. Rather, they are both created for the mutual benefit of each other. Also, in the Qur'an it's indicated that all of mankind is made from a single soul. Also, they were equal in destiny when they were ordered by God not to eat from the forbidden tree, which resulted in their exile from heaven because of the temptations of the devil "Satan", not by the temptation of Eve.The first two instances the woman and the man are still in legal marriage. The third occasion of pronouncing divorce in the presence of the woman, the man is no longer legally the husband and therefore has to leave the house. The purpose of this procedure of divorce in Islam is to encourage reconciliation where possible. Even after divorce, the woman should wait three monthly cycles during which her husband remains responsible for her and her children's welfare and maintenance. He is not permitted to drive her out of the house.[89] This process may leave the woman destitute should her family not take her back or the ex-husband fail to support her and possibly his children.
